A memorial at the rebuilt Ground Zero church brings families, first responders and faith leaders together in remembrance.
Twenty-five years after the September 11 attacks, Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine welcomed victims’ families, survivors, first responders and civic and interfaith leaders for a memorial service at Ground Zero.
The September 11, 2026 gathering honored those who died and emphasized remembrance and unity across faiths. Its setting carried particular significance: the original Saint Nicholas church was the only house of worship destroyed in the attacks. The rebuilt shrine now provides a place for reflection beside the World Trade Center memorial.
The milestone also has a Tampa Bay connection. Pete Karamitsanis, now a principal and client advisor at InVision Advisors, helped oversee the church’s rebuilding. His involvement was documented by ABC Action News in 2021 as the project approached completion.
This year’s commemoration shows the lasting public purpose of that rebuilding effort: a place where people can gather to remember lives lost and share a commitment to peace.
